How to Configure Phone Number Validation in VBCS

Visual Builder Cloud Service (VBCS) is a low-code platform provided by Oracle that allows users to create modern, responsive web and mobile applications quickly. One of the essential features in any application is validating user input, and phone number validation is a critical aspect of ensuring correct data capture.

Phone number validation in VBCS can be used to ensure that users enter valid phone numbers, conforming to specific formats based on country, region, or any custom rules. This validation helps in:

  • Ensuring data integrity: By ensuring that phone numbers are correctly formatted and valid before submission.
  • Enhancing user experience: Providing immediate feedback to the user when they enter an invalid phone number.
  • Reducing errors: Catching issues early before the data is processed or sent to a backend system.

In VBCS, phone number validation can be achieved through the use of input components, validation rules, and JavaScript functions. You can define the expected format, use regular expressions (regex), or integrate with external services for more advanced validation like verifying the existence of the phone number.

Step 1 – Log in as an Administrator
Sign in to the application using your Administrator credentials.
Once logged in, navigate to My Client Groups.
Under the Quick Actions section, select Hire an Employee to initiate the employee hiring process.

Step 2 – Access the “Hire an Employee” Page and Navigate to VBCS
After selecting Hire an Employee from the Quick Actions menu, the Hire an employee page will open. From this page, proceed to the Visual Builder Cloud Service (VBCS) environment to configure.

Step 3 – Configure Phone Number Validation in VBCS
Once inside Visual Builder Cloud Service (VBCS), navigate to the Business Rules section.
In this area, you can define or modify validation rules for various fields.
Locate the field corresponding to the Phone Number and configure a validation rule to ensure that the entered phone number meets the required format and standards (for example, correct length, numeric input, or country code format).

Step 4 – Create a New Business Rule and Define Its Parameters
Begin by creating a new rule within the Business Rules section of VBCS.
Inside this rule, specify the necessary components to define how the validation should behave:

  • Condition: Set the criteria that will trigger the validation (e.g., when the phone number entered does not match the required format).
  • Summary and Severity: Provide a summary message describing the rule and assign a severity level (such as Error or Warning) to indicate the importance of the validation.
  • Target Fields: Select the specific field(s) the rule should apply to — in this case, the Phone Number field.
  • Details: Add any additional information or messages that will be displayed to the user when the validation condition is met.

Step 5 – Preview and Publish the Validation Rule
After configuring the rule and defining all required parameters, preview the setup to ensure the validation works as expected. Test the rule by entering sample data to verify that the phone number validation triggers correctly.
Once the rule has been successfully tested, publish the changes to make the validation active.

Step 6 – Verify the Validation Functionality
After publishing the rule, test the functionality to ensure the validation is working correctly.
Try entering a phone number with more than 10 digits in the corresponding field — the system should now display an error message, indicating that the input does not meet the defined validation criteria.

Step 7 – Test Validation for Incomplete Phone Numbers
After publishing the rule, perform an additional validation check to ensure accuracy.
Enter a phone number with less than 10 digits in the corresponding field — the system should display an error message, confirming that the input does not satisfy the required length criteria.

Business Benefits

Implementing phone number validation in VBCS delivers multiple strategic and operational advantages that contribute to maintaining high-quality data and improving overall system performance.

1. Improved Data Accuracy:

Accurate contact information is essential for effective communication and smooth HR operations. Phone number validation ensures that only correctly formatted and complete phone numbers are captured at the point of entry. This reduces the risk of storing invalid or incomplete data, ultimately improving the reliability of employee records across the organization.

2. Enhanced User Experience:

Real-time validation provides users with instant feedback when incorrect or incomplete phone numbers are entered. This helps employees quickly identify and correct mistakes, enabling a smoother and more intuitive data entry process. By preventing errors upfront, the application becomes more user-friendly and reduces frustration during form submissions.

3. Operational Efficiency:

Incorrect phone numbers can lead to unnecessary follow-ups, manual corrections, and communication delays. By enforcing validation rules in VBCS, HR teams and administrators can significantly reduce the time spent tracking and fixing data issues. This leads to higher productivity, fewer administrative tasks, and lowered operational costs.

4. Compliance and Standardization:

Many organizations follow specific formatting rules for employee contact information to maintain uniformity across systems and departments. Phone number validation enforces these standards automatically, ensuring data consistency and supporting compliance with internal policies or regional regulatory requirements.

5. Better Communication:

Reliable phone numbers are essential for delivering important updates, alerts, and HR notifications. Validated contact details ensure timely and accurate communication with employees, which is especially important for payroll updates, leave approvals, emergency alerts, or policy changes. This fosters better employee engagement and minimizes communication gaps.

Conclusion

Implementing phone number validation in Oracle VBCS is a crucial step in ensuring that applications capture accurate and reliable user data. By configuring validation rules, using regex patterns, or adding custom JavaScript logic, you can enforce proper formatting and provide immediate feedback to users during data entry. This not only enhances the accuracy of employee contact information but also improves the overall user experience by reducing input errors and guiding users to correct them instantly.

Beyond usability, strong phone number validation contributes to better data governance and operational efficiency. It minimizes manual correction efforts for administrators, supports compliance with organizational standards, and ensures consistent, high-quality records across the system. With the right validation setup, your VBCS applications become more robust, dependable, and aligned with business needs.
