PeopleSoft on Oracle Cloud

Running your PeopleSoft application on oracle cloud infrastructure will be beneficial compared to traditional on-premise infrastructure. The application is still customizable as per the business needs, as it is IAAS where customers have leverage to do any customizations to the product as they used to do on premise application.

You can start consuming Infrastructure As A Service and leverage the key benefits of cloud computing – Agility, Reduced TCO and Scalability.

With the release of latest peopletools, the technology platform is now equipped to fully realize the potential of running PeopleSoft on cloud. Cloud utilities in peopletools include – DPKs, automated configuration manager etc allows for dynamic scaling, quick patching and optimize hardware resources by creating middle-tier virtual machines on demand.

Any cloud provider with right framework would be suitable to run a PeopleSoft on cloud infrastructure. Oracle Cloud is one of the option. In this blog, we detail our experience using Oracle Cloud.

Why Oracle Cloud?

Some of the enhancements to PeopleTools technology can be leveraged on any cloud platform. However with its own cloud infrastructure, Oracle has built more capabilities that PeopleSoft can leverage to take this automation to the next level, which isn’t available at other cloud vendors. Cloud manager for PeopleSoft showcased at Open World is a perfect case in example, with purpose built orchestrations for Oracle cloud it greatly simplifies PeopleSoft environment management tasks, all from easy to use web front end, fancy that.

PeopleSoft will not just move to cloud but it will thrive in cloud because, It’s now a product with the technology platform that can fully realize the potential of cloud computing. Product maintenance has long gone agile with continuous delivery model and granted the power to customers thru selective adoption. A unique value proposition for an enterprise product that can custom fit to business process yet stay agile and offer the benefits of cloud computing.

We followed the below basic approach in moving our environment to cloud,

Required Components:

  • Oracle Storage Cloud Service
  • Oracle Database Backup Service
  • Oracle Database Cloud Service
  • Oracle Compute Cloud Service
  • Peoplesoft Cloud Manager (Optional)

Oracle Compute Cloud Service Shapes

General Purpose: OC4 – 2 OCPU, 15 GB RAM

High Memory: OC1M – 1 OCPU, 15 GB RAM

More options are available under Oracle Compute Classic

PeopleSoft Cloud Architecture:

SUBSCRIPTIONS REQUIRED:

  1. Oracle Storage Cloud Service
  2. Oracle Database Backup Service
  3. Oracle Database Cloud Service
  4. Oracle Compute Cloud Service

Oracle Database Backup Service for Performance, Redundancy,Security:

  • Data replicated in multiplie storage nodes in different regions.
  • Encrypted database,transfer and backups.
  • Faster restores.

 Clone:

  • Use Database backups clone development,Test, QA for in cloud or On Premise.

Deployment Model:

The deployment model is standard and robust.

Lift and shift is the easy and effective option.

Lift and Shift Requirements:

The following are some of the considerations which users need to plan before migrating environments to Oracle Cloud:

  • Supported Oracle versions are 11g and 12c.
  • If you do not want to make application access public, other alternatives like VPN must be evaluated.
  • If you do not want your web sites to be public, you will have to work with the Cloud team to figure out alternatives. (For example, VPN.)
  • All third party integration will need to be manually reviewed and set up.
  • If the lifted environment requires COBOL, then it must be manually installed and configured after Cloud Manager shifts the environment.
  • Users may have to get new certificates for SSL and SFTP support.
  • The minimum PeopleTools version should be PeopleTools 8.55.12.
  • The Minimum PeopleSoft applications version should be PeopleSoft 9.2
  • Lift and Shift is supported only on Linux environments. Any OS specific customizations will not be lifted and must be manually re-configured on the shifted environment.
  • Any application specific software/installations/configurations will need to be manually configured.
  • Lift of non-unicode Database is not supported for this release.
  • Lift of RAC Database is not supported for this release.
  • Lift of TDE enabled Database .mine is not supported for this release.
  • Lift should be performed on a Linux system with Python 2.7.9 set as default for Python.
  • When performing Remote Lift and connecting to the remote machine with a password, please ensure not to have special characters such as *? [ ] ‘ ” \ # ; & ( ) | ^ < > new-line space and tab in the password.
